Illegal Charity in Orlando – Compassion Center of the World

Here’s the article that I was talking about earlier.

I’ve reprinted it here:

Orlando Bans Feeding Homeless Downtown

ORLANDO, Fla. — City officials have banned charitable groups from feeding homeless people in parks downtown, arguing that transients who gather for weekly meals create safety and sanitary problems for businesses.

The measure, approved Monday, prevents serving large groups in parks and other public property within two miles of City Hall without a permit. The American Civil Liberties Union vowed to sue, saying it’s a superficial fix that ignores the city’s homeless problem.

City commissioner Patty Sheehan pushed for the ordinance after complaints from business owners and residents that homeless people were causing problems at a downtown park popular with joggers and dog walkers.

A group called Food Not Bombs, which has served weekly vegetarian meals to homeless people for more than a year there, said it would continue illegally.

Robin Stotter, who is opening a restaurant downtown, said he would support homeless people by pledging money for food and shelter, but supported the ordinance.

“The homeless issue is not going to be solved today,” he said. “It’s a safety issue, and the public deserves a safe place to be.”

Two of the city’s five commissioners voted against the ordinance _ including Robert Stuart, the head of a homeless shelter.

Stuart said the city was moving to “criminalize goodhearted people.”

“We’re putting a Band-Aid on a critical problem,” said commissioner Sam Ings, the other opposing vote.

“Okay. Lecture’s over – Time for some FEEDBACK!”

Yeah, dude! Check out the official site. You’ve gotta tell me which hero you like best.

I’m voting (technically, I’m not, but hey) for

  1. Major Victory (watch the premiere with him hoisting the lost girl and doing a gun-finger to a guy on a walkman – and tell me that’s not cool)
  2. Feedback (For authentic geek quotient)
  3. Cell-phone Girl (Her powers are actually cool)

I wouldn’t mind Ty’veculus winning. He seems like an honest gladiator.

For my non-geek friends, it is a reality show (you like unscripted shows, right? That’s the viewing trend, right?) hosted by Stan Lee (creator of X-Men, Spider-man, The Hulk, Fantastic Four, and many more). The winner gets a comic where their character is the hero. They also get…how cool is this?… a Sci-Fi Channel 2-hour original movie!

That’s right, bub. These friendly, neighborhood geeks have their own secret lair and are given missions on little communicators (see also Charlie’s Angels).

I’m also curious to see what people would look like as superheroes. Check out the hero creator here.

Here’s some video, like their auditions.

Major Victory

Who wants to be a superhero? Excelsior!

I whole-heartedly endorse this show.
People tried to do the normal reality show stuff and Stan Lee booted ‘em. I don’t want to say too much more, in case people TiVoed it (I had to watch it at my brother-in-law’s house because I lack cable). Sci-Fi Channel at 9pm on Thursdays (at least in AZ).

Who’s cooler – Denmark or France?

Post your comments! Who will win? Who will capitulate?

In case you’re wondering about the latest delusion, it’s in reference to my new site meter toy. It tells me the cities that people are logging in from.

Here’s my official shout-out to Cedar Rapids, Iowa! What?

I really just set it up because I wanted to see just how many times Peter and Devin read the site. But then these images come along:

It makes me feel like this:

Remember, Copenhagians, you can find my new pictures here. One of these days I’ll put up some video from camping.
Mainly it’s of fire.

Lebanon

So, it’s a little bit more serious than TMNT or Fun with Dick and Jane. (We paused the movie because my daughter woke up. I’m likin’ the movie.)

With Lebanon, if you’re looking (and not just my friends in Mantua and Denver – and Austin, Texas, I found out) for a way to help, this might be the way to help.

I know…2003 anyone?

I just have to say that Knights of the Old Republic is amazing. (I haven’t played KOTOR II) Now I know that Mike was right to want to lend me his XBOX for two weeks to beat the game. Fortunately I had birthday credit left from Bookmans. $10 for the PC! Nice. This was in addition to Rebel Stand, the sequel to the book Rebel Dream. Add into that the Darth Vader action figure that I got for Arwen at Fry’s and it was a good day. (A little obsessed, some may say. They would be right.)
I wondered how Mike knew so much about Mandalorians and why he had such a disdain for the inaction of the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. I thought that was just Mike being Mike.
So…answering the Council questions as if it were me in the game, my natural class is Jedi Consular. Interesting. Have people seen the DnD personality test put out by Wizards?

More than meets the eye!

I saw Pirates on Sunday. Just like Superman, I’ll give people time to go see it. The reason I rushed to see it was so that I could avoid people like me who tell the whole plot.

While waiting in line, I got interviewed by a marketing firm. Jim Keegan *wink wink nudge nudge* helped me out. (Although the college boy wrote down ‘Tegan’.) I looked at a poster for Waist Deep. They asked me what I thought about it. I said that it had a naked man on the poster and that I wasn’t too keen on naked men. They asked me what I liked about the poster. I told them that I liked the font because it was blue. He asked if it was my favorite color and I said yes. Keep in mind that I was wearing a light blue shirt and dark blue shorts. He then proceeded to ask me 40 questions about my hobbies. He had promised that I could watch a trailer but it never happened. One of the options for hobbies, amid ‘Camping’ and ‘Attending art shows’, was ‘Drinking beer’. “You want to play a board game? No, let’s just drink beer.”
An unfair twist of fate for Pirates was that the trailers beforehand were for Night at the Museum and Transformers.
‘Museum’ looks incredibly funny.
Transformers stars Shia LaBeouf/Beowulf (sp) and Bernie Mac and is directed by Michael Bay. (I look for directors instead of actors. I’m pumped that it’s Michael Bay because he did The Rock and Armageddon and The Island and Bad Boyz and other movies where flying vehicles chase vehicles on the ground. Trust me: watch a Michael Bay movie and try and tell me there’s no air-to-land chase. It’s like a John Woo movie without two-fisted guns diving to the side.

Transformers also stars Tyrese Gibson, who I guess is in Waist Deep as well. The marketing guy asked me if I knew The Game. I guess it’s a hip-hop star in Waist Deep. I threw the question back at him. He said that he was familiar with The Game.

Figures.

Freedom, explosions, and a car alarm

These things and more you can relive with us here at our Fourth of July Re-enactment Site.
We were sitting outside of the stadium, so we could not hear Proud to be an American, but we were next to the actual launching field. When the dust storm hit, it made it even more visceral. I’ve titled that photo “run”.
So, here come the links:

These all require you to have a flash plug-in, which you can find here.

The flickr site and the YouTube site are not monitored by me, so be careful where you click. (My reguar readers will say, “Well, yeah”, but I’m sending this link to family, as well. Thus the “Cutesy” category label.) For a cool thing, view the YouTube videos in full-screen (the button is in the bottom right-hand corner of the player window and has two overlapping squares).
