I must admit that after finally watching Chuck last night, I may be the only one stuck in the loop right now. But did anyone else have “that 80s song about Africa” stuck in their head?
My brain: Something something down in Africa…
Well, to help your brain and mine, here are the lyrics:
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you
Chorus:
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become
Chorus
(Instrumental break)
Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
Kari, you’re welcome.
Of course, Slade, this is already in your working knowledge.
I thought Chuck was great. Jeffster, because Jester would be associated with fools? That’s funny. And then Morgan’s lie to the triads about being level 60 was appreciated.
The one that I expect more from is Heroes. I feel like I’m at the zoo standing around, waiting for the lion to do something crazy, but instead he’s just laying on his side staring at the sky. I know he has the potential for so much more, and I don’t see him every day, but I spend a lot of time waiting. It’s not many shows that offer gritty characters with superpowers shot in non-CW film quality. Here’s hoping for tonight.
I could act like the “get back” coach on the field, yelling for the lion to hustle and “get back, get back!” I just need a cap, shorts, and a pair of tube socks. A whistle is not necessary because I wouldn’t really offer any insightful coaching, just mass encouragement.

This man sat on me in high school. He is not a “get back” coach.

Heroes continually frustrates me, because I could see where it could be so much better. Every week, I feel like I’m on the edge of giving up on it entirely, and I’m never quite sure why I don’t.
Give us some character development, guys. If you’re going to make Nathan into a tyrannical figure intent on putting people with powers in holding because they’re a danger, then make him that figure, make him the bad guy. Don’t give us an underling who is going to make Nathan, once again, question everything- Nathan has spent three seasons waffling sides on everything, let him take a position and keep it for once! I haven’t seen much development from anyone else, either- Hiro, Claire, Matt, Noah, they’re all pretty much the same they were back at the start of the show, save for some minor changes. The only person who has changed much? Sylar, and that’s just because he’s gone from “straight up evil” to an inconsistent attempt at “conflicted villain.” Suresh, too, I guess, but his whole character arc, such as it is, has been so muddled that it confuses me.
While we’re at it, can we also see some heroing? They have these powers, and no one seems to use them much. Sure, Claire saved someone from a burning train in the second episode or so, and Matt used his telepathy a few times before he stopped being a cop, but it seems like most of the time anyone uses a power, it’s because they’re in a squabble with someone else using a power. Come on, writers, have them start fighting crimes! Give them some supervillains to face off with! Let them do something other than argue about if they should use their powers or not.
“because I could see where it could be so much better”
That’s me waiting around for the lion to do something.
And yes! I haven’t seen much epic-ness. We have half a city running around with enhanced abilities and the worst we do is a plane crash and a burned research facility.
A plane crash, a burned building, and a lot of talk about what they should do about their powers. Even the nuclear explosion over New York City at the end of the first season had very little fallout. Sorry.
On the other hand, I love Chuck more and more, every episode I watch. Maybe I just appreciate having a little Adam Baldwin snarkiness in my week, maybe I just think it’s great that they have nerds who don’t look like models with glasses, but Chuck is one of the main reasons why Hulu is an important part of my entertainment schedule each week.
(The other main reason: My crush on Tina Fey.)

Yeah Heroes has been disappointing this time around. I was happy that Peter stopped whining and actually capped a dude (even if it wasn’t a killing shot it was a step in the right direction). If something exciting doesn’t happen soon they better change the name to The Heroes Who Don’t do Anything (vegetales reference).
Seriously though Lexi stopped watching it last night…… and she picked out and watched Riding in Cars With Boys.
Weird. That’s what I did, too.
(And nice Larry reference.)
