Happy Day (in many connotations)

Today you should definitely follow my tweets/twitterstream/insane/inane ramblings. Click here for that link. Tonight I’ll be going to the Third Day concert. They’ve been one of my favorite bands since college, even more so after getting hooked on rockabilly and just plain ‘billy music from Firefly.

My date is super hot. I hear she’s in her 20s, but that may change today. I need someone that can handle distinguished sideburns.

Also, J has posted a video from Easter. Very cool on all accounts. See if you can find:

  1. A bass player encouraging groove.
  2. A trumpet that could hang with Wynton.
  3. My mom with a videocamera.
  4. The Church doing what it was born to do.

Here’s the video:

but you should leave a comment on J’s site.

Best Songs in which to Stage a Fight Scene

  1. Mr. Roboto – I would like to say that I always knew that this song would be involved in a wedding shootout, but that would just be ridiculous. We knew Jeffster would be back, but we didn’t know that they would make such a…bang. I would love to #savechuck, but if they’re done, what a way to go.

  2. The Rocky Road to Dublin – Imagine all peaceful on a nice path and then highwaymen show up – swords/dueling daggers are drawn and whiskey jugs are tossed as people go madly spinning.

Also of note – best use of the word shillelagh in a song.

  3. In the Hall of the Mountain King – This one has always beat out “O, Fortuna” and “Night on Bald Mountain” for me, especially when performed by a German hair band string ensemble:
  4. Duel of the Fates/Battle of the Heroes – Every time I hear “Duel of the Fates” I have to scream “No!!!” at the killing of Rob Roy and every time I hear “Battle of the Heroes”, I tear up a little. (I do that when Obi-Wan dies and tells Luke to run, but that’s more of a death scene than a fight scene.)
  5. Into the Trap – Every time I think of space combat, this enters my brain. To be honest, every time I pull the Scion out of the driveway, this enters my brain. And when I merge in traffic, and when I…
  6. That Lobby Fight Song from the Matrix – as much as the Matrix has been over-hyped (we’ll forget that there were any sequels) I have to admit that when we saw this in college, we immediately jumped around the theater while leaving like we were in bullet time.

Although in Bollywood, the hero doesn’t need anyone else’s help:

Were my wife and I the only ones to watch Kung Pow!: The Movie?

I know that I’ve left some off – with all of the big summer blockbusters in May and beyond, I’m sure you can think of some more.

Worthy of mention is Chief Wiggum’s Sunshine and Lollipops, but I classify that as more of a chase scene.

About Espresso Press and Starring in a Book

I get frustrated when I go to a bookstore and they say they have the book at every location except for the one I’m standing at.

I don’t like paying for shipping (or paying a subscription to not pay for shipping).

But have you seen the Espresso Book Machine? It launched on Friday at a Blackwell’s bookstore. You type in which book you want, it binds a new copy while you drink a cup of coffee.

Insane.

Now you don’t have to worry about books being in stock, especially rare/old books.

What will really be interesting is to see how the employees of the 60 branches scheduled to get the machines adapt. Will people look for more recommendations now? Less? There will be less time walking the shelves, straightening titles and all that. What if the employees now had a set-up like an Apple Store Genius Bar?

Did you like Skeleton Creek? (Creepy, right?) In October Ghost in the Machine is coming out. I’m very excited.

Yes. How does that book have a sequel? Perhaps it’s a companion book.

But would you like to be one of the video stars in the book? Patrick Carman’s studio will be holding auditions on May 1. Click on the link for more information.

Choose whether you want to read for the guy script or the girl script and it will open the audition PDF file. Videotape your audition and put it on YouTube following their directions.

Even if you don’t want to audition, it’s still pretty fun to read parts of the script ahead of time.

I can’t find where to audition as the bearded librarian…

If you like baseball… (and a thank you from The Administrator)

It’s interesting when the bloggh runs better than I know it is. For starters, I’m very thankful for all of the readers. It’s fun to check in and see people from way-back reading (as well as people from afar…welcome to my faithful readers from Bucharest and Melbourne. I must admit that I don’t know who you are, or why you daily come back to this hive of villainy, but welcome!).

Commenters – thank you for adding to the discussion. I was commenting to my wife that sometimes my comments feed reads like a script of Statler and Waldorf.

And then there are times where links that I set up are updated. Woohoo! Thanks, Devin. I just noticed that you’re offering sports commentary on a different site.

Everyone, check out Line Drive in the High Desert. Bookmark it. RSS it. Digg it. RT @ # it.

And perhaps even read it.

Wii no ma

Or as I like to call it – “What the..?!”

May 1 you’ll see a new option (in Japan) on the Wii. Much like what Sony wanted with Home, you’ll have your own personal space for your Mii to hang out and manage media. Your TV in the Sims-ish set-up will play actual videos downloaded from Nintendo.

My prediction? Anime. I do realize that I may be going out on a limb with such a gutsy prediction.

It seems there are also places in your virtual hangout that when you click on them take you to ads. How…exciting?

My guess is that you won’t be able to interact real-time with other people, but you’ll probably send messages to other Wiis. What would be interesting would be VC game demos on a virtual system.

It’s nice to see that the current console to popularize avatars (understanding that there was previously Second Life and Alpha World) is getting in on the virtual world idea.

Also, will the NSA approve the new First Blackberry (Blackberry One?) for Obama? It’s interesting that this article comes out alongside an article about triangulating locations for prison-smuggled phones.

One billion apps downloaded from iTunes. Craziness.

Japan’s paying immigrants from Latin America to go home and never seek work in Japan again. Spain did this, but didn’t make too many headlines. It’s interesting the types of jobs that the immigrants took:

“kitsui, kitanai, kiken” — meaning “hard, dirty, dangerous”

I can’t remember which comedian it was (or demotivational poster) that said that if your job could be replaced by a guy who doesn’t understand English, your job stinks and will probably be replaced by robots.

There’s an interesting social experiment going on with Facebook and voting. The ghost of Benjamin Franklin approves.

I see this photo and I think The Office.

Space Blobs will Kill us All

Update: I Twittered (Tweeted?) this yesterday but forgot to link to it for other people. Have you seen the new G. I. Joe? It has the same intensity as a Bourne movie. (So no little ones clicking on this, you hear?)

There’s talk of this Lyman-alpha blob changing how we view galaxy formation, possibly changing how we think about the origin of our own galaxy. Or it could be a fluke.

Or it could be a giant blob in space waiting to absorb us all? Am I the only one who noticed that this is huge – from 12.9 light years away?

I think we should focus our global efforts on the world’s largest spoon.

Mike, I humbly request your forgiveness for mocking your plan for the two of us to enroll in Space Camp. We need it now more than ever.

High hopes for future of gaming

There has been a drought of quality in games over the past several years where a great game can easily be lost in the midst of sub-par products. The near future has great potential to provide gamers with some of the best games to come out in a very long time. The following are titles that I am looking forward to the most to come out:

1.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 modern-warfare-2_pc_box-tempboxart_160w

2.) Diablo III diablo-iii_logoversion_rpboxart_160w

3.) Star Wars: The Old Republic star-wars-the-old-republic_pc_windowsbox-tempboxart_160w

4.) StarCraft II starcraft2_tempbox_2boxart_160w

5.) The Conduit* conduit_wii_esrbboxart_160w

The reason I placed an asterisk by the title is because about 10 years ago an independent group of developers coming from out of nowhere named “Dynamix” showed the entire gaming world what a real team-based FPS game is supposed to be all about, so here’s to hoping that these guys put out a great product. The jury is still out with this game. The Conduit guy has gone from looking like a geeky kid showing up to a nerd convention to looking like a futuristic Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat.

All of the games that I listed above each have their own potential to be incredible games that will suck the lives away from millions of normal average citizens and transform them into cave-dwelling hermits whose skin burns at the slightest contact with sunlight – fatgothkid

Who knows when StarCraft II or Diablo III will come out, Blizzard seems to be taking their sweet time with both titles and fans world wide have clung to rumors only to end in disappointment. Another RPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic has promise because the vehicle behind it is BioWare, and they have yet to let me down…just hoping this will not be another Star Wars: Galaxies.

In my opinion Modern Warfare 2 will be the redefinition of shooter games by ushering in a new style of teamplay action. This game is the one I am most excited for, and since Infinity Ward is behind it I have full faith that they will spend a considerable amount of time making an incredible game.

Riches Far More Than You Can Imagine

Have you seen these? I could have sworn that I’ve seen them on software boxes. They’re uber-barcodes, which is pretty funny for a librarian. In one fell swoop one family upgraded my geek status to “more geeky than before”, which is pretty impressive. “Impressive” Hmmm…what geek quote can I put there?

Ah, yes.

No matter where you go, there you are.

These QR uber-barcodes are increasingly popular with mobile phone crowds, like in Switzerland, Japan, and Australia. Augmented Reality through QR Codes, I guess. You point your phone at the box, phone program converts the box, funny message (or usually advertisement) comes across. I tried running a couple of barcode programs on my phone, but they wanted me to have data access. I don’t have data on my phone; if you want to read what my shirt says, try putting the image URL into this site.

Chuck was awesome tonight. I loved the drive-in movie theater from Back to the Future III.

One thing about Heroes that my wife noticed that some might not – Baby Matt Parkman was facing his car seat backwards last time, now he’s facing forward. That’s a big change for a baby.

I worked on setting up barcode readers on my phone while I semi-watched Heroes. I think I still got the gist – this Sylar guy has issues and kills people.

Here are some quick photos from the birthday extravaganza:

I received two shirts. One is the QR code, the other shall make its world premiere on Saturday for La Noche de la Guerra de las Estrellas. World premiere? Cine Capri for the win. Gambit and Sabretooth will be hanging out in Scottsdale on the red carpet.

Some quick news blurbs:
Twitter now works for Charles Xavier’s Exceptionally Gifted students:

Seriously. Tweeting with your brain. That would be a first for Twitter, in all connotations.

3D camera for the semi-consumer market.

Have you seen the “similar images” search in Google? It looks useful if you want a different resolution of the same photo or if you want clip art that’s a little bit different from the previous images. It’s not like iPhoto’s new trick, where it can recognize facial colors and contours. Similar Images uses the metadata attached to image search results.

If you want Google image results to improve, you can check out the game that they set up so that you’ll whitewash their fences for them.

All of the Fallout fans with Blackberrys (berries?) can turn their phone into a working Pip Boy. Nuclear residue with style.

The gifts didn’t end with donuts and geek shirts. More photos to come throughout the week.

Here’s a shirt that made me laugh, even though I don’t have it. Wash would be proud:

And what post isn’t improved with a samurai?

Who doesn’t love books?

Communists, and people who refute the existence of Johannes Gutenberg, that’s who. But for the rest of us, books are a great thing. I mean, Hunger Games*.

If you’re looking to pick up a few books this week- and you should be- you might want to make your way over to PJ Haarsma’s website. You might remember Haarsma from his visit with Booyor last September, and he’s got a charity he started with some guy who was in Professor Awful or something. That charity helps libraries buy books for kids, which I think is a cause we can all support, and you can help buy using the coupon at Haarsma’s website. All for something you probably would have done anyway. So give it a go. There’s always a new book worth picking up.

On a related topic, my sister went and saw a high school production of Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, and she described it as “adorable.” I did find a flickr set of pictures up, and it looks pretty awesome. Mike, I believe you have your spring musical for next year.

*No, I’m serious- Hunger Games! Hunger Games!

Three Decades

I thought about titling today’s post like a Vanguard chapter with Roman numerals, but then I realized the SEO trouble that would bring me.

So look at what three decades can do:
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

I had to re-prioritize my Vanguard deadline with editing wedding videos, filming dance concerts, and getting bass music ready (and there’s this thing called “AIMS” that takes up some time for testing coordinators). I’m shooting for the end of the school year. I’m at chapter 111 and very excited.

After a long absence, I revisited our Animal Crossing town yesterday. They’re very supportive:

But then I remembered that they’re insane:

We had teppanyaki last night. My wife loves me.

I think I’ve gotten the most well-wishes this year than any year. Thanks, everybody.

Madden News

In an attempt to win over the cosmetologist demographic (as opposed to the cosmologist), it looks like Fitzgerald and Polamalu might share the cover for the next Madden game, ending their careers completely.

The Madden curse extends to John Madden himself. Trained at Juilliard and Cambridge in the theater, he lost his mind while playing “The Scottish King Who Shall Not Be Named” and was reduced to mindless prattle about moving the chains.

The most unfortunate part is that it ended John Madden’s career when it was just starting to gain momentum. Now who will I switch off in the audio options?

There are snakes on this plane.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Four baby pythons escaped from a container aboard a passenger plane in Australia, leading to a search that forced the cancellation of two flights, the airline said Thursday.
Twelve non-venemous Stimson pythons were being transported Tuesday on a flight from Alice Springs to Melbourne in the plane’s cargo area in a bag inside a plastic foam box with air holes.
When the flight landed, it was discovered that four snakes had escaped from the package, a Qantas spokeswoman said in a statement.
A reptile expert searched for the 6-inch (15-centimeter) -long snakes but did not find them. It was not known if the snakes were still on the plane or if they had somehow escaped outside after the plane landed.
In the meantime, the plane missed two flights it had been scheduled to fly and the passengers were transferred to other flights.
When the snakes were not found, the airplane was fumigated and it returned to service on Wednesday.
Stimson’s pythons, which can grow up to three feet (one meter) long, live in western and central Australia and are not an endangered species.
