This bleeping thing

image

Days ago I had turned on this mask’s distortion mic. Seconds ago I was vacuuming when it beeped out of standby (a sound very similar to a police siren starting up) and started to cycle back at me a distorted vacuum growl.

Yep. I jumped.

New look, same nerd

I wanted my site to load faster, especially on my mobile, so hopefully it works for you. I’m trying to streamline the RSS feed, too.

We got to see lots of #75 playing today, which always makes for a good day. Every time the kicker comes in, he’s booting it from behind Man Mountain. When the career touchdown record was broken, #75 made sure the extra point went in.

I loved watching the game on the “screen”, if only because I could eat behind the screen and not miss the game.

Some links of note today:
If you want to hear about the artist behind the movie posters for pretty much every geek movie ever, (same guy that did Star Wars, Goonies, Indy, Blade Runner…you get the idea) click here.

If you want to play with online LEGOs for free, click here.

The real Captain Jack Sparrow surprises a kid here by going to her school.

Wookiees dance to Smooth Criminal here.

Fun day with Dad: Figure out who is the traitor on your crew.

We didn’t turn the TV on until 5pm today, and that was to watch Mythbusters on Netflix, so I’m pretty proud.

For part of the morning we played with Duplo. I’m pretty good at making battlemechs using only square pieces, but I decided to experiment and bust out the LEGOs that I’ve accrued over the years.

I also wrote a lot today. One short story I’m actually going to send off to Asimov’s magazine. More details shortly (hopefully). (The agent for my novel asked for 8 weeks to read the first 50 pages. He reads as quickly as my 8th graders.)

Today’s mini-adventure involves the plucky crew of a landcruiser. Your job is to figure out who will betray them midseason on the TV show.

Who will betray our fine team?

Ace, the brash driver

Crossbownes, the sidekick picked up in the pilot episode
Mac, the navigator

Aero, the touring stunt pilot
Maggie, the violent, yet feminine, gunner

Chief, the battle-worn quartermaster

Murray, their agent

I guess LEGO minifigs are big believers in nondisclosure agreements

Photobucket
The agreement was administered by a LEGO pirate, so I’m wondering if it’s more of a guideline than a rule.

Can you just feel the nostalgia in these words?

Declaration of Secrecy

Furthermore, the undersigned declares that all such Information shall only be used in connection with the co-operation with LEGO System A/S and shall in no circumstances be copied or reproduced in any way without the prior written consent of LEGO System A/S.

The undersigned hereby furthermore declares that I will never use the Information as mentioned above for any commercial purposes.

The undersigned accepts that all such Information remains the property of LEGO System A/S and therefore, at LEGO System A/S option, either has to be returned to LEGO System A/S after the termination of the co-operation or has to be destroyed.

I just got my LEGO Universe Closed Beta Invitation!

Here’s what showed up in my e-mail:

Congratulations, you have been chosen to participate in the Closed-Beta test of LEGO Universe!

The Maelstrom is trying to destroy imagination, so hurry up and create a LEGO Universe account with your LEGO ID. You’ll be a heroic minifig before you know it.

What I find funny is that there are limited times when I can play. It must be server maintenance or something.

So, if you want to find me, here are the times:
* Thursdays: 17.00 – 03.00 EU (CET) / 11 am – 9 pm US (EST)
* Saturdays: 20.00 – 02.00 EU (CET) / 2 pm – 8 pm US (EST)
* Sundays: 14.00 – 17.00 EU (CET) / 8 am – 11 am US (EST)

New LEGO games on the way

An update to LEGO Indiana Jones is in the works, with more content added for The Crystal Skull. (Why? I don’t know. Although LEGO Shia is a funny prospect. Nevermind.)

Also, LEGO Harry Potter is in development. Will it include Deathly Hallows? Will it include actors too old to still be in secondary schooling?

No. Yes. (Although it would be cool to see a game based on just the book and not have movie references to work from. It would be like how we got to see Kashyyk in Battlefront before it was shown in Episode III.)

But where’s the Alpha Team? I think we’re due for a Wii version.

Pirates vs. Ninjas – LEGO Universe Style

Ninja hideout or pirate watership, which is the better to make out of LEGOs?

My personal leaning is towards the pirate watership. (Even if they do exclude airships, which we know all gamblers and raconteurs need to try at least once in their careers.)

I thought that they would have some cool java-powered web app to build a ship. I was going to try and build one quickly while the students type up their poems in the library (an assignment where I made a new haiku up off of the top of my head for each hour…I may have some experience with this somewhere before).

No java app. They want you to upload media files. It’s more of a MyLEGOTubeBucketBook type scenario.

The great irony is the disclaimer:

Copied or pirated images (someone else’s photo taken without permission) and images that are considered indecent or obscene are not acceptable.

Don’t pirates…pirate? Don’t they err more towards the obscene and not acceptable? Isn’t that their niche?

Images of people being ninja-starred or nunchucked to the face are strictly prohibited.

Video games and dice

Brian’s been focusing on the dangers of the real world lately, so in the interests of proper ying-yang balance and chi flow of the blog (or something), I will step up to supply some entertainment for you.

Today, I don’t have much to offer, quantity-wise, but I feel the quality makes up for it. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the trailer for Lego Batman. I, personally, am always excited when I see someone’s breaking out of Arkham, and if you toss in my love for Legos? Looks like a winner to me.

In your Calendar of Obscure and Largely Made-up Holidays, you might notice that today is GM’s Day, so be sure to give your game master, dungeon master, or story teller a quick thanks for their hard work, interesting plot lines, and extreme amounts of patience in not killing off your entire party out of frustration. Thanks, guys. Without you, we’d just be weirdos sitting in our living room, tossing around strangely shaped pieces of plastic. With your help, we’re Jedi, or half-elf mages, or dashing bandits, or mech pilots, or…

I’m afraid my post isn’t all good news, though. On GM’s Day, it seems oddly fitting to find out that Gary Gygax, the man at least partially responsible for the entire hobby, has passed away. I can only hope that an overly-elaborate, multi-level mausoleum will be built, and he’ll be buried with several powerful magical items that can only be retrieved by defeating the dozens of monsters that patrol the hallways.

Finally, in more of a middling ground, I enjoyed this article about Grim Fandango, one of those games that was entertaining, but difficult to market, and thus failed commercially.  It was a somewhat odd game, but very fun.  It was, as I recall, one of the first games I played on CD-ROM, and one of the last “adventure games” I recall coming out before the genre was grievously wounded by FPS, RTS, and console games.  Unfortunate.
